Grey - Tristan Confresi (UHS WINNER!)

Grey, was the color that washed away,

as I stepped foot in the box that day.

The enclosing walls

and imposing halls

decomposed in the eyes of a naive child.

Because the only bars I knew,

were made of chocolate.

And a jumpsuit, I knew,

was what Mario wears.

And I thought I knew,

that a brother

sticks with you through and through,

so I embraced him,

even through the glass.

The grey he wore,

was not a color I knew.

And so, that moment passed.

Grey, was the color that crept into view,

As the summers, and then winters passed through.

Finally unshackled, I believed,

he could finally be there for me.

He could be my best friend

He could be my guide,

my true brother.

But alas, some dreams could never come true.

The time he had to visit,

had a clearly defined limit.

So as time swept by,

and the dew of his presence ran dry.

A birthday or three passed,

while his absences amassed.

Without a text or call to assuage the wound.

I think in those days,

as my resentment grew

grey finally became a color I knew.

Grey, is now the only color I see,

whenever that man appears before me.

What once appeared vibrant

now appears dull.

Years of affection unreturned,

has led to days of silence,

and even on the day he returned,

with open arms,

I had nothing to say,

to a man shrouded in grey.

And he remains this way,

To this day.
