Sifting through - kay thayer

Rain patters like sugar

over the window sill.

time: flour sifting

through the whisk.

everything blends together

and the clouds paint us gray.

i substitute ingredients,

your behavior and

the blame.

there’s too much salt

on our lips.

the oven rings out,

thunderous in the empty

kitchen.

i close the oven door

behind us

and watch everything

go up

in smoke.
